About Sofia Johansson

Has a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Gothenburg and is now a PhD student at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, Atmospheric Science group at the University of Gothenburg
(starting 2015).

My research
Particles in the atmosphere have a major impact on Earth's radiation budget; their composition, size distribution and lifetime are some of the features that determine the impact of these particles on the climate. Although there is a lot of research pursued around the world in this area, there are knowledge gaps that need to be filled.

We conduct experimental studies where we look at how water molecules in gas phase interact with different surfaces, such as surfaces of ice or organic compounds, at conditions with atmospheric relevance. The studies can provide information about dynamic and kinetic processes occurring between the gas molecules and the molecules at the surface; Information that can be related to how particles in the atmosphere grow or shrink in size. For the experiments, we employ the Environmental Molecular Beam (EMB) technique which is a method that allows for studies of surfaces at elevated pressure.
