Om Marica Ericson

Ericson is the principal investigator of the Biomedical Photonics group. She has an interdisciplinary research profile spanning from basic science and optical spectroscopy, to clinical applications. Her research is focused on advanced optical microscopy techniques for biomedical studies, e.g.,  for experimental skin research, antimicrobial research and nanoplasmonics. The research has resulted in breakthroughs, particularly related to studies of reactive xenobiotics entering the skin. Her work has been highlighted internationally to “advance the understanding” of mechanisms involved in skin exposure.


Ericson received her Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, in 2004 on the topic “Spectroscopic measurements and fluorescence imaging for treatment and diagnosis of skin cancer”. Thereafter she was appointed Post Doc working clinically with non-invasive imaging techniques for diagnostics of skin cancer at the Department of Dermatogy at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital. In 2007, she became Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics at University of Gothenburg, starting to build up her independent research group in Biomedical photonics. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010. From Sept 2010 to Aug 2011, she was appointed visiting researcher at Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Texas, Austin (TX), USA, in the group of Assoc. Prof. Adela Ben-Yakar. Ericson is since Jan 2013 also coordinator of the Centre for Skin Research, SkinResQU, in Gothenburg.
