Postdoctoral scholarship: Lipids and metabolites in signalling plasticity, nanoimaging of cells and vesicles

Nyhet: 2018-05-08

The scholarship holder will collaborate with other group members doing electrochemical analysis and will use imaging mass spectrometry and STED microscopy to image cell membranes and vesicles as well as vesicle compartments. The holder will test the effects of drugs in the fruit fly model, Drosophila, using imaging mass spectrometry. The effects of feeding specific lipids to flies will be tested on the release of transmitter and vesicle content of octopamine type II varicosities in Drosophila larvae – a system where we can measure exocytosis. If the amount released increases or changes in duration per exocytosis event, then the larvae neurons will be imaged with SIMS and NanoSIMS to examine if the amounts of lipids have increased/decreased in the brain and in subcellular regions, respectively. The plan is also to look for changes in transmitter distribution across vesicles and changes in the levels of metal ions, specifically zinc, if present in Drosophila vesicles.

Dnr: E 2018/315

Scholarship period: The scholarship covers a period of 24 months.

Preliminary start date: 2018-08-15

Supervisor/contact person: Andrew Ewing, +46 (0)761172293, andrewe@chalmers.se

Qualifications:
• To be eligible for a post-doc scholarship at the recipient must hold a PhD degree within a relevant field. The applicant must not have been employed at University of Gothenburg in the past two years.

• Applications for this scholarship need to have experience with MS imaging of the distributions of anti-cancer metal (Ru or Pt) complexes duel-targeting to EGFR and DNA combining ToF-SIMS, SEM and confocal microscopy, including studies to co-localize the distributions of cisplatin and endogenous HMGB1 protein using ToF-SIMS, nano SIMS and Confocal Microscope at subcellular levels. This position requires experience using in situ liquid SIMS.

Written application, including reference number, is to be sent via e-mail to the supervisor and must include the following:
• CV
• Personal letter stating the reasons why the study suits the applicant (maximum one page)
• List of publications
• References (2)

Application deadline: 2018-05-29

Information regarding scholarships:
• Scholarships do not give rise to sickness benefits, compensation from the Social Insurance Office or retirement pension.
• The scholarship sum is paid out quarterly
• Scholarships are tax-exempt
• A scholarship holder cannot be hired after the scholarship period due to tax reasons.
