About Beidong Liu

Current position

Research

My present research interest is focused on deciphering mechanisms underlying aging-related diseases by developing and applying novel high-content screening techniques using yeast
(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a model system. The powerful high throughput screening approach, developed in my group, enables me to study all the possible combinations between a phenotypic reporter of choice and a collection of gene mutants throughout the yeast genome in a few months (while a conventional manual test would take more than several decades). This approach makes it possible to pull out almost all components being part of any specific biological machinery and allows for an unbiased, genome-wide, identification of components and networks involved in, for example, protein quality control, protein aggregate formation and inheritance and epigenetic silencing.

  • 1. 2016-2019, Swedish Research Council (VR 2015-04984), Mechanisms controlling sequestration and detoxification of Huntingtin proteins in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).
  • 2. 2016-2017, Swedish Cancer Fund /Cancerfonden (CAN 2015/406), Identifying machineries and pathways controlling stress granule formation – roles in cancer initiation and progression.
  • 3. 2015-2016, Carl Trygger Foundation (CTS 14: 295), Deciphering machineries underlying protein inclusion body formation in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).
  • 4. MoRE (Marie Curie) fellow, 2015-2017, Marie Curie/Cofund Mobility for Regional Excellence (MoRE) fellowship. a mobility programme co-financed by the EU within the framework of the Fp7-People-COFUND programme.
