Functionalized carbon nanostructures and transition metal dichalcogenides for energy-related applications

Abstract
TBA My research activities focus on the design and synthesis of new and multifunctional carbon nanostructures (fullerenes, nanotubes, graphene) as well as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). More precisely, those nanomaterials are functionalized with organic chromophores and inorganic nanoparticles to yield hybrid materials with advanced characteristics (optical, photophysical, electrochemical) targeting energy-related applications (photoelectrochemical cells, electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, etc).

In my talk, I will present recent results based on the functionalization of azafullerene C59N, graphene and TMDs (MoS2 and WS2). Substitution of a carbon atom from C60 by nitrogen leads to azafullerene dimer (C59N)2, due to difference in valence between carbon and nitrogen, possessing narrower band-gap and easier reduction compared to parent C60. Herein, I will present the main aspects of azafullerene chemistry and the realization of some C59N-based donor-acceptor dyads with interesting photophysical properties. Then, I will move on the functionalization of exfoliated graphene sheets with NIR dyes, while also discuss the preparation and electrocatalytic activity of graphene-based and TMD-based hybrids featuring diverse metal nanoparticles towards the oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction. Finally, I will show a methodology for the chemical functionalization of TMDs, based on reaction with 1,2-dithiolanes that possess high binding affinity for Mo and W atoms with sulfur vacant sites located at the edges of MoS2 and WS2, respectively. The particular functionalization methodology has allowed the preparation of an array of TMD-based hybrids managing charge-transfer processes.
