Soft matter in Li- and Na-batteries: from polymer electrolytes to organic electrodes

Research profile seminar

Abstract:
The Science of Li-ion and other high-energy density batteries are at the cross-roads of electrochemistry and materials chemistry. In this context, there exist a number of tasks for researchers with a background in soft materials to develop and tailor different battery components for the next generation of energy storage devices. These include the development of organic electrode materials, which in many aspects can challenge the conventional inorganic counterparts used today. Regarding electrolytes, solid polymer systems have experienced a renaissance based on improved energy density and better battery safety. Moreover, by proper selection and tailoring of the electrode binders, significant improvements in performance can be realized, not least for complex next-generation battery chemistries. In this presentation, different approaches to explore this broad range of organic-based materials for future battery chemistries will be discussed.
