New professor in molecular genetics

News: Aug 08, 2019

Five questions...
... to Margit Mahlapuu who has been promoted to professor in molecular genetics at the Faculty of Science, University of Gothenburg.

Professor Margit MahlapuuHow do you look upon becoming a professor?
— This professorship is an important milestone for me. I am very grateful to my research group, mentors and colleagues, and to my family, who have all supported me along the road.

What does this appointment mean for you?
— This is an important acknowledgement that my and my team’s research has been recognized and is considered important and competitive.

Does this appointment change anything with regard to your work?
— This appointment will not change my current research focus nor my future scientific plans, but it will motivate me to work even harder to reach my research objectives. I also hope that it may increase the interest from doctoral and post-doctoral students, both in Sweden and abroad, to join my team.

What is your research about and what will you do next?
— My research combines studies in unique mouse models and well-characterized human cohorts with cellular and in vitro assays. The aim is to provide insight into molecular pathogenesis and to find novel treatments and/or preventive strategies for type 2 diabetes and related complex metabolic diseases with high unmet medical needs.

What is the key future research issue according to you?
— Today, there is still a very strong medical need for new and efficient treatments for blockbuster indications such as diabetes, but even more for orphan and neglected diseases which continue to cause extreme suffering and death. In my opinion, the future challenge is to consolidate our research efforts in order to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of these diseases and to find efficient therapies.
