Education in Chemistry and Molecular Biology

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology provides a unique study environment in Sweden where expertise and knowledge span across a wide range of molecular sciences. Here, you are offered a choice of four Master’s programmes and a number of specialized courses within the fields of chemistry and molecular biology.

Regardless of the programme or course, you as a student are in focus. Throughout your time with us, you will learn from dedicated teachers and world-class researchers with in-depth knowledge and extensive international networks. Classes are given in different settings, from traditional lectures to small-group work. You will put theory into practice during our many laboratory courses, which allows you to develop strong analytical and laboratory skills. At the end of your studies, you will perform an individual project work within one of our top research groups.

One of the strengths of the University of Gothenburg is that you can tailor your education to your own interests and ambitions. This means that you not only can specialize in the subject of your choice but also can broaden your knowledge by taking other natural science courses and/or reading other subjects at the university, such as economics, leadership or a new language. This allows you to create a unique interdisciplinary degree, and thus a unique profile on the labour market.

At the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, we aim to give you a solid foundation by incorporating current research into our teaching and by giving you both a broad knowledge and a deep understanding in important scientific questions needed to solve future global challenges. This will open many career opportunities within academia, the private and the public sector.

And last but not least, student life is so much more than just studying. Gothenburg is a charming and vibrant city with lots of restaurants and cafes, cultural events and sports facilities – all within cycling distance. Need a break from the lively centre? Nature and sea are just a stone's throw away.

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology!

Normally the autumn term is between 1/9 until 18/1, and the spring term between 19/1 until 7/6. The start of each course, however, can vary. Please contact our student councellors for more information.
