The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology provides a unique research environment in Sweden covering a wide spectrum of topics in molecular life sciences and chemical sciences. About 45 research groups, many of which have internationally leading profiles, form the core of the Department’s research activities in:

Research at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology addresses many of the major challenges that our world is facing today. In addition to a wealth of basic research, applied research with topics ranging from diabetes, cancer and antibiotic resistance to climate change and the creation of new materials with highly specialized functions, our researchers endeavour to support the UN Sustainable Development Goals in human health, clean energy, sustainable cities and climate action.

By offering outstanding facilities and supporting interdisciplinary collaborations with national and international partners in academia, industry and government, the Department aims to create an excellent environment for innovative research.

Top 40 worldwide in ShanghaiRanking 2019
In the field of Life Sciences - Biological Sciences, the University of Gothenburg ranks amongst the top 3 in Sweden and top 40 worldwide according to ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2019. Biological sciences include biochemistry, molecular biology, biophysics, cell biology and microbiology.

The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high quality research using innovative techniques and modern equipment such as imaging mass spectrometry, NanoSIMS, electron microscopy and NMR (see below).
