Air quality in developing countries

The focus of this research has for a long time been on investigating the air quality situation in different urban environments in Africa.

Air pollution in urban Africa is a serious treath to the healthCurrently we are studying the differences in particulate pollution in selected sites in Greater Cairo, Egypt. The objective of the projects in Kenya is to establish and use a well equipped measurement site for air quality studies in Nairobi to gain a better insight into the air pollution situation in a rapidly growing urban area in Africa south of Sahara. Using the data from the measurements investigations of the chemical and physical processes of the pollutants involved are done and the influence of different sources is assessed. Similar studies have been done in Burkina Faso, but there the focus is more on the urban climate and its influence on pollution patterns.

Prior to the work in Africa environmental investigations were done in Vietnam. There the main objective was to determine the level of trace element pollution in northern Vietnam and its impact on the environment. The trace element concentrations were determined both in aerosol particles and in aquatic biota.

Work is also done in cooperation with partners in India, Saudi Arabia, Cameoon and Ethiopia.
