Major research themes at Microbiology include environmental and evolutionary microbiology, aging and protein quality control, microbial signalling and communities, environmental stress sensing and tolerance, as well as genomics and systems biology.

The main model organisms used include Escherichia coli and the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast). Yeast functional genomics and cell biology is a strong research area at CMB and the participating research groups are highly interactive and share technology platforms for high-throughput genetics and cell biology. Thus, microbiology at CMB provides an excellent environment for successful interdisciplinary research in the life sciences and an outstanding training ground for students and postdocs.
