Organic and Medicinal Chemistry

The division of organic and medicinal chemistry includes internationally recognised expertise in

The fundamental research is coupled to potential applications in material and life sciences.

The division's research groups have strong interdisciplinary, collaborative links both locally and internationally, within academia and with industry. Collaborative work includes pharmaceutical and chemical industries, biological and medical researchers in the areas of metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases, antiinfective, cancer, skin allergy, physics and chemistry researchers with a focus on materials and imaging.

Many of our publications are in high impact journals such as Nat. Commun., Angew. Chem., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Chem. Sci., Nano Lett. and J. Med. Chem. Our research groups have also been awarded several prestigious research grants.

The division of organic and medicinal chemistry offers a highly international and stimulating working environment.

Dermatochemisty research aim to understand the chemical mechanisms behind contact allergy. Of particular interest to me is the mechanisms of photo contact allergy,that is light induced.

Alesia Tietze’s research is focused on engineering of bioactive peptides, membrane proteins, peptide-based bioinspired materials.


Marica EricsonMarica Ericson

Biomedical photonics concerns research focusing biomedical applications related to the interaction between light and matter. Of particular interest is multiphoton microscopy using femtosecond pulsed near infrared light. More information: Biomedical Photonics

Development of enzyme inhibitors and their use as experimental tools for visualization and selective perturbation of biological processes in vivo and in vitro.

Luthman’s research has for a long time been focused on the design, synthesis and use of peptidomimetics. At present the development of modulators of enzymes in the sirtuin family is of special interest.

Research conducted in the Wallentin group centers on method development within catalysis as well as targeted synthesis of biological relevant compound classes.

Karl BörjessonKarl Börjesson

Börjesson’s goal is to tame organic molecules. His group uses optical spectroscopy in order to learn how to channel the energy of excited states towards a predetermined direction.

Good Health and Well-being. Several projects aim at developing novel compounds for the study of problems important in cell biology and medicine. Such compounds are interesting both as potential therapeutics and as experimental tools for understanding the physiological roles of the target proteins.
